Followed by a satisfying slideshow or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/laraparker\/cats-who-have-made-very-poor-life-choices#.ynXDnlzeyO\" target=\"_blank\">listicle<\/a>? As distracted, time-starved online readers we&#8217;ve become accustomed to a steady diet of content snacks. Because users don\u2019t want to read, they scan. And that makes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">writing <em>less<\/em><\/a> more important than ever.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Here are five ways to cut the fluff and get to the point:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3>1. Invert the story<\/h3>\n<p>Instead of starting with background and building up to the point, do exactly the opposite.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Practice ruthless exclusion<\/h3>\n<p>If you need to write a lengthy discourse go right ahead. But go back and delete excess words, phrases and sentences. Users love concise copy. It&#8217;s the <a href=\"https:\/\/twobenches.wordpress.com\/2008\/06\/05\/krugs-3-laws-of-usability\/\" target=\"_blank\">third law of usability<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Spread it around<\/h3>\n<p>Few things send users running like long, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gatesnfences.com\" target=\"_blank\">dense blocks of copy<\/a>. Use smart design, compelling images and soothing white space to make your story palatable. Negative space really is a positive for <a href=\"https:\/\/redonkmarketing.com\/blog\/the-experience-lingo\/\" target=\"_blank\">user experience<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Consider the destination<\/h3>\n<p>Rarely do we create the end of the customer journey. Embrace the fact that you just need to move a user effortlessly to the next step, and you&#8217;ll feel much less pressure to say <em>everything<\/em> on every webpage.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Know when it&#8217;s over<\/h3>\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve told your story, don&#8217;t be afraid to drop the mic and walk away.
